Organic Gardening Compost - Learn How to Make it Like the Experts Do

By: Melissa McKyler

Organic gardening is incomplete without organic gardening compost. This is a very essential element of organic gardening because it ascertains the plant's life as well as the helpful insects that supports plant growth. Things that can go into your organic compost are twigs, leaves, rotten fruit, manure and other natural wastes. These will eventually decay and turn into nutrients the plants need.

Organic gardening compost is important because it helps even out the soil. It improves the structure of the soil, its ventilation and the retention of ground water. It has the nutrients needed by your plant, which even the best sandy loam soil cannot provide.

You should have a compost pit when making organic compost. Get your power garden tools ready and start digging a deep hole, the size should be enough to contain the natural waste you'll throw in. Organic compost can also be made above ground if you have ample space. Just be very careful because this could be a health hazard due to the live microorganisms, insects and the smell.

A shovel or a strong pitchfork comes very handy if you have your organic gardening compost pit. This will be used to turn over the compost or carry the material to the plants. Take note that the place where you should place the pit is somewhere fancied by organisms dwelling in soil like earthworms. These creatures are responsible for the break down of the organic matters which aid in the discharge of nutrients needed by the plants. So go on, befriend them!

You may put coffee or tea grounds and eggshells to the organic gardening compost; these can easily be found at home. Their different levels of nitrogen contents and other essential elements when released can make a ground ideal for gardening. Adding manure to your organic gardening compost is excellent. Cow's manure is favorable because its size makes it easy to gather and it can be obtained or bought at nearby farms.

Use the shovel to turn over the compost pile at least every other week. This will hasten the process of composting for it will enable insects and the like to go to untouched manures or leaves. You can determine if the compost is ready based on the smell. It is ready when the smell is rich, sweet and earthy. If it still stinks after it's broken down, then it might have more than enough water or it requires more oxygen.

Some things you will need to avoid tossing to your organic gardening compost are bones, animal fat and trimmings contaminated with plant disease. These are health hazards that may pollute your compost pile.

When the natural wastes have been broken down by earthworms, the finest result your organic gardening compost would have is called vermicompost. This is an excellent soil conditioner and contains the most amounts of nutrients needed by your plants.
